Before you approach a brigade
This guide offers general volunteer preparation only. Current CFA-specific eligibility, assessment and training requirements are unconfirmed here.
Your availability
Write down the time you can realistically commit around work, caring responsibilities and travel. Ask which activities and training commitments would apply to you.
The role and support
Discuss your interests, experience, support needs and questions about operational and non-operational opportunities. Do not assume a particular joining process.
General preparation while you enquire
Prepare to learn, communicate and work with others without treating career test scores as volunteer entry standards.
A sustainable routine
Build ordinary fitness progressively and seek appropriate advice for your circumstances. Leave specialist equipment and hazardous scenarios to authorised training.
Useful examples
Think about occasions when you listened, helped a team, followed instructions or responded constructively to feedback. Honest reflection is more useful than rehearsing an invented persona.
Turn the guidance into a preparation plan
Keep an application checklist, practise the assessment skills you need and build physical capacity progressively. Review your weakest preparation area regularly. A FirePrep readiness result does not decide eligibility or guarantee selection.

How can I prepare before speaking to a brigade?
Write down your availability, transport arrangements and reasons for volunteering. Ask what support, training and commitments would apply to your intended role.
