Tasmania firefighter recruitment, explained

Tasmania Fire Service runs smaller, less frequent intakes and weights the interview heavily. The 12-month rule between attempts means a poorly-timed application can effectively cost you a year — worth getting right the first time.

TAS recruitment FAQ

What's the TFS 12-month rule?

If you're knocked back at TFS, there's typically a 12-month wait before you can apply again. That's the published cadence — combined with infrequent intakes, an under-prepared first attempt can effectively cost you a year. Don't apply until your PAT and interview prep are actually in range.

What's the TFS shuttle-run cut-off?

TFS uses a shuttle (beep) run close to the national fallback — roughly level 9.6 — alongside push-ups, plank and grip work. The shuttle run is the early hard cut; everything else is graded once you're past it.

How often does TFS recruit?

Tasmania Fire Service runs small, irregular intakes — sometimes annually, sometimes with longer gaps depending on attrition and budget. Subscribe to TFS recruitment notifications directly; the application window is short when it opens.

Where is TFS recruit training run?

TFS recruit training is run in Hobart. It's a full-time, in-residence course, so factor relocation from the north of the state (Launceston, Devonport, Burnie) into your decision to apply.

Find out where you actually stand

Fifteen minutes, free, no card — just a quick signup. FirePrep benchmarks you against the same domain weights and PAT minimums as the TAS services above, names your limiting factor — the one area most likely to drop you out — and points your training there first. As your numbers move, the focus moves with you. That's the adaptive loop.
