SA recruitment FAQ

What's the SAMFS PAT cut-off?

SAMFS runs the PAT in two stages. Stage one is a beep test around the national fallback (roughly level 9.6), and only candidates who clear it move into the functional capacity assessment — equipment carries, hose drags and a stair climb under load. Both stages have to pass; the beep test alone isn't enough.

Does SAMFS recruit every year?

Not on a fixed annual calendar. SAMFS opens campaigns when intake is needed, and the merit list from one campaign can be drawn from for some time afterwards. Subscribe to MFS recruitment notifications directly so you don't miss a window.

How does the SAMFS merit list work?

Once you've cleared the PAT, cognitive and interview stages, SAMFS ranks candidates on a merit list and draws from the top as recruit-course places open. Interview performance is what usually decides the top of the list — the technical stages mostly determine whether you make the list at all.

Where is the SAMFS recruit training college?

SAMFS recruit training is run at the MFS Training Centre in Adelaide. It's a full-time, in-residence course, so factor relocation from regional SA into your planning if you're not already metro-based.

Find out where you actually stand

Fifteen minutes, free, no card — just a quick signup. FirePrep benchmarks you against the same domain weights and PAT minimums as the SA services above, names your limiting factor — the one area most likely to drop you out — and points your training there first. As your numbers move, the focus moves with you. That's the adaptive loop.
